PhD-level Research Scientist to Support Remote Sensing of Aquatic Environments

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking applications for a full-time, PhD-level Research Scientist to join our productive team of scientists working on various NASA grant-funded projects. Our current research focus is on algorithm development and validation for generating products from current and future national or international multispectral and hyperspectral missions in aquatic ecosystems. Our team produces high-quality satellite derived products, including chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), as well as phytoplankton absorption/backscattering properties from moderate-resolution data including Landsat, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3. We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist to conduct regional and/or global assessments on impacts of the changing climate, landuse/landcover change, and episodic events (e.g., storm, wildfire) on freshwater and coastal ecosystems. The incumbent will evaluate how these stressors influence the carbon cycle and aquatic habitats in space and time. This will have a strong science background and demonstrated skill in code development for data analysis, as well as a track record of peer-reviewed publications. The candidate is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills and required to produce and lead high-quality peer-reviewed publications.

The position is nominally located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD, but a telecommuting option is available for the right candidate. 

The selected candidate must be able to quickly obtain NASA credentials.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in Climate science/biogeochemistry/limnology/hydrology/oceanography and 2-3 years or related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience should include at least 2 years of experience in at least 1 of the following:
    1. Aquatic/terrestrial/atmospheric remote sensing
    2. Data/imageanalysis
    3. Ocean/aquatic sciences/biology
    4. Hydrological modeling.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Programming: Python, R, or C.
  • Platforms: Linux,High-performance computing systems.
  • Experience should include at least 2 years of experience in at least 1 of the following:
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with machine learning is highly desirable
  • Experience at GSFC or other NASA center is desirable
