How the world’s northernmost forests are also under threat from climate change - Inquirer.Net Earth & Environment
Forests play an essential role in capturing and storing carbon. But climate change poses a growing threat to these ecosystems. With fires and deforestation linked to human activity, the Amazon rainforest in Brazil has, for example, released more carbon than it absorbed in the last 10 years, according to recent research.

Solving Ecological Mysteries using Satellite data - New York Times
LCLUC Scientists map the historical Land Cover and Land use changes using the Corona Imageires. Imagery from the Cold War’s Corona satellites is helping scientists fill in how we have changed our planet in the past half-century. To map a landscape’s history, foresters long depended on maps and traditional tree inventories that could be riddled with inaccuracies.

Commercial Satellites Shed Light on Small-Scale Agriculture - NASA Earth Data
A recent article in NASA EarthData highlights studies of small-scale agriculture mapping using commercial satellite data by LCLUC PIs Matthew Hansen, Christopher Neigh, and Jessica McCarty and their teams. Small farms play a large role in food security, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. In fact, small farms (measuring less than 2 hectares or 20,000 square meters) produce about one-third of the world's food supply. But the size of these farms can make them difficult to map using coarse or moderate resolution satellite imagery.
