LCLUC PIs are using commercial high-resolution imagery to map small-scale agriculture in Africa and Asia

Small farms play a large role in food security, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. In fact, small farms (measuring less than 2 hectares or 20,000 square meters) produce about one-third of the world's food supply. But the size of these farms can make them difficult to map using coarse or moderate resolution satellite imagery.  A recent article in NASA EarthData highlights studies of small-scale agriculture mapping using commercial satellite data by LCLUC PIs Matthew Hansen, Christopher Neigh, and Jessica McCarty and their teams.

NASA LCLUC South/Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SARI) Contribution – 2 Volume Books on Biomass Burning in South/Southeast Asia, CRC Press (2021)

Biomass burning is one of the most important sources of greenhouse gas emissions and aerosols in South and Southeast Asia and significantly impacts other countries through transboundary air pollution. With contributions from leading scientists, the 2-volumes offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the mapping and monitoring of fires, impacts of biomass burning on the land resources, climate, and the atmosphere, including policy aspects.

Is your organization, institution, company or consortium using satellite data to halt deforestation in the tropics?

GFOI's leading partner the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) will grant advanced access to high-resolution satellite data to selected users aiming to help reduce and reverse tropical forest loss to contribute to a stable climate, protect biodiversity and enhance sustainable development.

Dr. Krishna Vadrevu (NASA MSFC) along with Dr. Kasturi Kanniah (University of Technology, Malaysia), Dr. Garik Gutman (NASA HQ), and Prof. Chris Justice (University of Maryland College Park), led a special issue, “Forest Land Use Cover Changes (LUCC) and Impacts on Environment in South/Southeast Asian Countries” in the Forests journal. Nine different articles were published by different research teams from the region, including international collaborations.  Forests in South/Southeast Asia (S/SEA) are undergoing rapid changes due to increased population and economic development.
