LCLUC Represented at Space Week Northeast Conference, Forteleza, Brazil - Aug 14-20, 2023

Garik Gutman and Chris Justice attended the Space Week Nordeste Conference in Fortaleza, Brazil (Aug 14-21, 2023). This event attracted early career scientists and renowned researchers from Brazil along with international researchers and NASA Space and Earth scientists. At the opening of the meeting, Garik Gutman (NASA HQ) gave a keynote presentation on advances in land-cover and land-use change research with the focus on South America, particularly on northeast Brazil.

Eleanor (Kellie) Stokes Receives Kuno Award

Dr. Eleanor (Kellie) Stokes (PI) was recently announced as the winner of the S&R Foundation 2022 Kuno Award for Applied Science for the Social Good.  At the Universities Space Research Association, Dr. Stokes leads the Earth from Space Institute and has been widely recognized as a scientist who is proactive and passionate about the value of geospatial technology to the economy and society. The award, which includes $100,000 in funding, supports early- to mid-career women who are social innovators focused on addressing modern challenges.

Researchers develop machine learning model to improve Amazon carbon storage estimates

A collaboration led by an Oregon State University College of Forestry researcher has used very high-resolution satellite imagery to develop a machine learning model that aims to improve climate scientists’ ability to estimate aboveground carbon stocks in the Amazon. Findings of the study, funded by NASA LCLUC, were published in the journal Carbon Balance and Management and the work was highlighted in the Oregon State University news.
